Day CCCXXI

Kids Want Fun

They confuse their wishful thinking with reality, and what they see is not what is. I believe both the scouts and little league are about getting the kids to have fun, keeping them active, and out of trouble. Mom and dads need to keep their notions out of the kid’s business…which is to just have fun. If it’s meant to be then it will be, let them think about the majors when they’re older.

They forget it’s about letting kids have fun, it’s not the minors. There’s also lot of nepotism from coaches, after all most guys become coaches because they want to see their kid play ball. So they tend to play favorites with their boy, and his pals. It’s human nature, I guess, looking out for your own. But it’s hard to find people who do it for the fun of it, so sometimes for a lack of, they must let dads be coaches or assistants. Dewey loved kids, he was a scoutmaster for the love of it, he loved being a scoutmaster. He was one for over thirty years.

We used to run into guys on the street all the time, men who remembered him when they were scouts.

    “Mistah…Doooeeeee E!

“Why it’s…it’s Joey Pizza?” He pointed at the guy, smiling as he shook his hand.

“Ya membered me…wow! But it's Pisa, sir.

“Yea, ya wuz a royal pain in my ass wuzn’t ya, uh?”

“Haw haw haw…guess I was, sir.”

    “Ya betcha ya wuz!”

Aside from his notions of troop funds, he was one of a kind. He loved kids, and kids loved him. He was a fountain of information on camping; outdoors; fishing; he knew every kind of knot; how to start fires with twigs, and what not; how to cook, and I don’t remember how, but he once baked a cake in a Dutch oven from scratch. Honest! It was pretty good too.
