The Donation
He smiled at him, and
“Why thank you
trooper,” he responded, gave him a gentle pat on the head, and went looking for Dewey.”
“I just found out the
troop sings “God Bless America
all the time, uh?”
“Yes sir, at every meeting,”
he responded.
“Well…can they open
up for us? We, I would be very grateful.”
“We’ll be there,
sir.”
Dewey quickly rounded
everybody up, rushed the troop backstage, behind the drapes, he looked at them, smiled and said:
“Guys were going to
sing our song, nuting ta worry about, it’s jest like we do alla time, okay.”
They looked at one
another, smiled, nodded their heads in agreement, and when the curtains went
up, they sang their hearts out. Afterwards the applause was overwhelming, and I’ve always wondered if any of them ever
became a ham because of it. As the kids slowly filed back into their seats, the
captain came over to Dewey, and whispered,
“We’re so impressed Dewey,
the guys want to make a nice donation, so come see me later, and tell me how to
write out your check. Okay?”
Dewey smiled like
Bugs when he gets over on Daffy, he was happier than a stray mutt who just
found a new home, you could almost hear the caching in his mind, as he just happily nodded yes, and loudly responded,
“Yes sir!”
From where I was
seated, at the far end of the row, I could see how big Dewey’s eyes became as
he listened to the captain. Later, Jack told me,
“Da fiahmen gon give
da twoop a big donatatation, dude.”
