Bad air
I’ll never forget all the smoke in that
room. I don’t think any bar anywhere, at any time, would have produced as much
smoke as we did at that time. I was really hungry, and
left as soon as I was allowed. Instead of going to the mess hall, I went to the cafeteria.
The comm roon was in the base headquarters building, and the cafeteria
was right across from it. The lunch crowd was starting to gather, but the chow
line was fairly empty, and so I was able to get my lunch quickly. My stomach
was grumbling, so, I got some soup, to calm it down. I got a cup of navy bean
soup, a burger, and a cup of joe. I ate quickly because I needed to get some sleep
before five oclock.
During the day that place was full of officers from all over the
base. There were also some of the most gorgeous ladies eating there, civilian secretaries
enjoying their lunch along with the brass.
I was seating alone at a long table,
enjoying my coffee, and getting ready to head back to the
barraks. As I sat there I saw half my crew enter, Gerb along with them. They were
going through the line getting their chow, when my stomach started to
act up. I was starting to feel really uncomfortable.
I guess the beans gave me indigestion, and
added to the horrible angst from the comm room. The
guys approached my table, and as they started to sit with me, I unwillingly let
loose a submarine. I didn’t want to embarrass myself, and tried very hard to hold
it, but alas, it wasn’t meant to be. I just knew it was going to be a real stinker,
so I quickly got up and left.
