The Candy Store
All of these
activities have their anxious moments, where tobacco beckons us to lite up. We’re all recovering smokers, because at any time we
can give in to its allure, and grab a smoke. It takes a while, sometimes a very
long while, to actually quit. So don’t give up, keep the faith, and keep quitting.
Someday it will stick, time will pass, and you won’t remember when you last lit
up.
Quality of life
annoyances can cause us a lot of grief and stress that lead to lighting up. We had a cool candy store in the nabe, it had all
the papers, coffee, mags, candy, and little conveniences that we take for granted. Allan cheerfully greeted everybody at the beginning of the day, with a smile and
a joyous
“Good morning!”
It was a great way
to start the day, and he knew a lot of us old regulars by name; he seemed to
know all the latest gossip; and once in a while he had a way cool joke to make you let out a guffaw. We vented against the
wise guys running city hall, and sometimes we solved the world’s problems over a
cup of joe, and a cheese danish. Old timers were there all the time in the
mornings or afternoons passing the time with a cup of joe and a smoke. After three in
the afternoons, the place was full of kids looking for comics, or an afternoon
snack. He was there it seemed like for ever, and he saw many of our kids go through his
store, as they went from pre-K through college.
