Climbing Walls
We really didn’t know
how much she had put in the punch, and because of my ignorance of there being acid in the punch, I had drunk a lot of
it, like three or four cups. A few months later I found that dumb ass Sonia had
put four or five tabs into the punch. But at the time I was in my own universe,
the raindrops looked like beach balls, and I was soaked from, I felt through my
bones, my bones felt wet. I don’t know how long I was in the park or the rain,
but finally I reached my place. Then to my dismay, I found I didn’t have my
keys, they were in my jacket which of course was at George’s place.
The walls on my
building had a recess at every other brick, and so like a spiderman, I climbed
the wall halfway up to the fire escape ladder. Then either by stupidity or brilliance, without even thinking about it, I
pushed myself off the wall, and by grace or luck I managed to grab the ladder. I pulled
myself up one rung at a time, I remember it was slippery, and wet, my guardian angel
was really working overtime. At last I was able to bring my right leg up, and
find a footing on the ladder. Finally I was able to climb the fire escape, to my
window. At last some luck, it was open, I don’t know why, I always made sure to close
it. But on this horrible night it was open.
Once inside I took a hot shower, drank some
tea, and put on some dry clothes. Then I tried to sleep. Try indeed, as high as
I was I couldn’t, I saw the sheep laughing at me as I tried to count them, and
couldn’t remember which one was two or three.
