The Break In
Almost a year later, I
made a big sale, and a week later, late one Thursday night I was finishing the
order for delivery the next day. I almost stayed that night, exhausted, too tired to go home, I really thought long,
and hard about sleeping on the cutting table. I didn’t…fate, I really don’t
know, I ran out of smokes, decided to go home, and get some on the way. That
night, not long after I left, thugs broke the skylight, and crawled in, they took
every thing. They were malicious too, because what they couldn’t take, they destroyed.
“Rinnnnnnnnnng
rinnnnng rinnng!”
“Hello!”
“Kid! Ya gotta git
ova hea quick!” Alex cried.
“Wat happened?
“We’re out of
business son!”
“What happened?”
“Bastids broke in,
came in through da skylight, they took everything. Broke wat they couldn’t take too,” she sniffed.
We made a police
report, but what good was that, they were long gone. I was out of money, out of business, and suddenly I was smoking over
three packs a day. Somethings just make you smoke more, you keep trying, and
it seems things keep getting in your face. So you either give up or keep
trying. I love that saying by Jack Hawkings, “Never Say Die!” Actually it’s a
book about his experiences as a Japanese prisoner of war during WWII, and I don’t think it can
get worse than that. So it’s either die or keep living. I love life!
