Day XXIII

Meeting girls

Perhaps stomach cancer comes from chewing tobacco, and smoking a pipe…you know all that tobacco laced saliva you swallow. When you exhale, it comes back out the same way, out your mouth, or nose. I wonder though, if you closed your mouth, and pinched your nose, would it come out your ears. It would be a neat trick, I suppose, funnier than moving your ears.

I don’t know if that’s even possible, but since it’s all connected, you know… ears, nose, throat, mouth…so, maybe he did do it. But, I can’t really be sure! Anyway, pulling out a pack of smokes, and offering everybody a butt was a big deal. It was a great way to break the ice, especially girls… offering them a butt, it was so, so cool. Meet a girl, smile, and say:

“Smoke?!” as you held them out for her…ice broken!

Since we went to an all boys’ school, it was difficult meeting girls. There weren't any girls schools near by, and our supposedly sister school was way over on the east side, on 2nd Av or York Av, and 68th St. I don't remember its name, and anyway, the way things have changed, it's probably something else now. So we usually met girls on the way home, mostly when they got off the train, and on the walk home.

The city has many specialized schools, and kids study things that lead to a vocation or profession. I wanted to be a pilot, or work with airplanes, and there were only two schools in the city that prepared you for that. Haaren was one of them. These school are far from home, and unless you're lucky and live next to one, you ride the iron horsey.
